flyover (640x415)Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

What is Your Aim?

bluebird pair 3 (800x466)I think this devotional by John Piper is a good meditation for the new year. In the comments, Pastor Piper says,  “God’s revealed will for you is that when you get up in the morning, you don’t drift aimlessly through the day letting mere circumstances alone dictate what you do, but that you aim at something — that you focus on a certain kind of purpose.”

Click on the link below for the full devotional and let’s all consider how we can live 2015 with  purpose focused on love and good works.  Enjoy the bluebirds and Happy New Year!

Abide in Me

Daily Wisdom: December 29

What does it mean to “abide in me?” This devotional includes some sound advice to practice in the new year. We begin with faith, hope and love and then make those traits visible through daily prayer, Scripture study, denial of self, and patience. Click on the link below for the full devotional.
John 15:5 – “I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit; for without me you can do nothing.”

Using Our Gifts

hummingbird moth 4 (640x424)“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.”

~1 Peter 4:10-11 (NLT)

Awake My Soul

084 (640x424)“Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.”

~ Matthew Bridges, 1800-1894, and Godfrey Thring, 1823-1903

Hope you soul is singing on this Lord’s Day!

Backyard Bird Count

bluebird 2 (640x509)This weekend is your chance to be a citizen scientist and participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Take as little as fifteen minutes to observe the birds in your backyard and then report on the web site at http://gbbc.birdcount.org. The information from bird watchers across the United States and Canada provides important data for scientists as they study migration and population distributions.

Our deep snowfall in the northeast this winter has provided lots of birds at the feeders. In a few minutes looking out my window this morning, I saw:

The junco and white-throat sparrow are winter time visitors to our area. They are two birds that you can mark the change of seasons when they appear in the fall and leave in the spring.

We also had an assortment of woodpeckers (downy, hairy and red-bellied)

bird bathRemember if you feed the birds to provide a source of fresh water. Currently the snow is higher than our bird bath. but the heater keeps the water thawed.  Enjoy the birds today and all year long!

A Reminder from Micah

yellow and pink rose (640x424)O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.

Rejected…. again

BluebirdThis year we were sure the Eastern bluebirds were going to nest in one of our bluebird houses. For the past several years, we have spent a fortune on mealworms, made sure there was always fresh water in the winter and pampered the bluebirds in every way we could in hopes of having a nesting pair. Each year, they have decided to eat the mealworms, enjoy the birdbath but when it came to nesting they still preferred a tree cavity or perhaps a neighbor’s birdhouse.

bluebird pair 3 (640x373)This year the birds gorged on mealworms.

bluebird 1-25-1 (640x424)They enjoyed the birdbath

030And then, we had a pair investigating one of the houses.

014The male inspected it.

012Outside and inside

034The female inspected it.

009The male guarded it and chased away the other males.

030They inspected it together. Lots of going in and going out. Surely they are going to nest this year.

bluebird pair 2 (640x441)But once again, they appear to have found another location for their nest. They still stop by to eat mealworms but no activity around the boxes now. Each year I threaten to not feed them mealworms if they are not going to nest. But each year, I give in to the beautiful blue color and head to the store for another container of mealworms. Maybe next year….

Filled with Joy and Peace

Purple African Daisy (640x424)May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Bearing Fruit in Every Good Work

Cherries 2 (640x424)I am joining over 10,000  women in the Living Proof Ministries (Beth Moore) scripture memory challenge for 2013. On the first and fifteenth of each month, you post a verse on the LPM blog that particularly applies to your life at that moment. The goal is to end the year with 24 new verses added to your memory bank and to grow in a greater awareness of God’s Holy Word. My first verse is from Paul’s letter to the Colossians.

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience. Colossians 1: 10-11 (NIV)

Accomplishing Words

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven

and do not return there but water the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout,

giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth,

it shall not return to me empty,

but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Isaiah 55: 10-11 (English Standard Version)

Just as rain and snow descend from the skies

and don’t go back until they’ve watered the earth,

Doing their work of making things grow and blossom,

producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry,

So will the words that come out of my mouth

not come back empty-handed.

They’ll do the work I sent them to do,

They’ll complete the assignment I gave them

Isaiah 55: 10-11 (The Message)

Landscaping with the Word

In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.

James 1: 21 (The Message)

“He is not here; He has risen…” Matthew 28:6

“You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

“Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Acts 1: 11

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whosoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” Revelation 22:17, 20, 21

Happy Easter!

Walking for Water

While I was in Charleston, South Carolina for a long weekend with the granddaughters, we joined with over 2,000 walkers to support Water Missions International in their mission of providing fresh water systems in the poverty-stricken areas of the world.

At the registration area, walkers picked up empty buckets – symbolizing daily routine of millions of people who must walk over a mile to obtain fresh water.

The walk wound through the historic areas of Charleston providing views of the water, old homes, flowers and the Battery–a sharp contrast to the countries where Water Mission International works. Continue reading
